Velvet sighed happily. She rested her head on Laguz's arm and looked up into the glittering green pools of light. “You are definitely the best cure I have ever found for stress.”

He laughed; the deep rumbling vibrated through his chest, jostling Velvet.

“Glad to be of service.” He touched her cheek gently. “I've missed you.”

Velvet frowned. “Where have you been exactly? Since Atlantis?”

Laguz raised an eyebrow. “You want me to account for my whereabouts for the last six ages?”

Velvet smiled. “Not for the entire time, but I mean, have you been back to Earth? Were you in another dimension? Were you still a Merman at sea?”

“I was a Merman for a considerable amount of time. Until the end of the age after Atlantis in fact.”

“Wow, that is a long time. I had no idea that Merpeople lived so long.”

“Merpeople have no particular life span - they can essentially live forever. The only thing that kills them is the environment around them. And at the end of that age, the oceans heated to such a degree that we all agreed to leave, and enter heaven together.”

“Like the Mayans?”

“Yes, just like them.”

“But how did the Merpeople repopulate the oceans in the next age? Surely some of you would have had to have remained behind?”

“No, they had to start over again, the way Merpeople started after Atlantis.”

“How did they start after Atlantis? How did you go from being a man to a Merman?”

Laguz smiled. “I cannot believe how much you have forgotten.”

Velvet shrugged. “My soul is so old, that there are far too many memories for me to remember them all.”

“That's not true. I'm not much younger than you, and I remember everything. Every life, every age, and every time in-between.”

Velvet frowned. “Are you saying that I blocked out Atlantis on purpose?”

“It would seem so. Although why you would do that, I don't know.”

“Perhaps it was because I knew I'd miss you too much if I remembered you. Anyway, stop changing the subject, how did the Merpeople start?”

“By magick. Not the illusionary kind, the real kind. Where you imagine something, and then request it from the Universe.”

“And who made such a request?”

Laguz squeezed her gently. “You did.”

“I did?” Velvet was learning more about her forgotten past every minute.

“Yes. You saw it in a vision. You knew that Atlantis would soon come to an end, that the age would be over, but that ocean life would survive. You saw human bodies adapt to life underwater. And so you requested from the Universe guidance on how to bring about that future. You helped every soul in Atlantis who wished to make the transition, become a Merperson.”

Velvet thought about this for a minute. “Corduroy said that I knew I wouldn't survive the fall of Atlantis. What happened to me? Did I at least even try to go with you?”

Laguz's eyes clouded over and his arms tightened around her. “When you told me your vision, I tried to convince you that just because you had seen one possible future, it didn't mean that it would be the future you would experience.
